In viewing astronomical images, scientists are accustomed to manipulating contrast and brightness to highlight the desired features. The wide range of structures and intensities in the complex astronomical sources shown in this exhibition cannot be represented in a single image. The animation to the left illustrates this point; the slider on the bottom selects which of the five images is displayed. Each image is derived from the same digital file and shows the effect of varying brightness and contrast.
